Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Tucker.
Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I actually started writing at 7 years old with Powerpuff Girls fan fiction. Silly, I know, but it was always something I did to curb the buzzing ideas I had bouncing around in my brain.
Over the years, I tried many outlets—drawing, painting, music—but nothing had quite the “movement” writing had. These characters in my mind became living, breathing beings when I wrote them out. They had personalities and choices. I never stopped writing, but at twenty, I wrote my first full-length novel. I knew then that I wanted to become a professional author. Not just a hobby, but my career. It took many years and numerous failed attempts to make that dream come true. Now at thirty-four, I have seven published works and am currently drafting my 11th novel.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is anything ever smooth? Anyone in a creative field—or any business, for that matter—that rejection is a lingering bedfellow. It isn’t easy making your way when so many others are reaching for the same goals as you. But one of the beautiful things about books, like music, is that you don’t have to have one favorite author. Readers consume novels like candy, and there are enough readers for everyone.
I started out my journey seeking a traditional publishing deal. I got a literary agent, went on submission, and realized after several years that I loved the business aspect of publishing nearly as much as the writing. I was completely capable of representing myself. I later opened my own press and began a new journey into independent publishing. I haven’t looked back.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am primarily a Adult and YA Fantasy author, though have also published Middle-Grade fantasy, a medieval romantic comedy and a how to write your first novel workbook for teens and tweens.
I’m best known for my two main series, The Revenant series (YA Dark Fantasy), which currently includes the first book, The Calamities of Camden Callahan, and its sequel, The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter. I have several more planned for the series. The themes of the stories revolve around life, death, rebirth, and healing, told from the perspective of a lord’s son turned pirate who is burned alive at sea and resurrected as an elemental fire-wielder. It progresses into a rocky partnership with a former slave, and their navigation of what it looks like to develop a healthy relationship after the trauma they’d endured.
My second series, which begins with my adult fantasy heist novel, Sunshine’s Syndicate, is focused on a mermaid scavenger who forms a crew of misfits driven to steal back the bones of her dead king from the conquering Elven emperor. She forms a relationship with a Vampire Offspring that suffers from severe PTSD from the treatment he’s endured from his maker.
My stories, through fantasy, always revolve around understanding, processing, and healing from trauma. My hope is that others will be able to heal alongside my characters, or at very least, find comfort in them.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I live on Camano Island, which is only a short drive from the city of Stanwood. I love my city. The Stanwood/Camano community is so vibrant, artistic, and genuine. We also have a flourishing homeschool population, and as a homeschooling mother myself, it brings such a sense of wholeness and fulfillment in my experience as a mother.
