Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Mohler.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been really passionate about bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. I volunteered in college to help educate students about sexual health and coordinated efforts to provide free condoms during educational events. I began working as a women’s health nurse practitioner in 2017, and I found myself wholly unprepared for the number of questions I was receiving around painful sex and low libido. So, I joined organizations, attended conferences, and really dove into the research around female sexual function. My practice slowly started shifting to focus on hormone management, sex medicine, and vulvar dermatology, since these subspecialties have so much overlap. In 2023, I decided to return to school to obtain dual post-graduate certifications in sexuality counseling and education. And then I finally took the leap in 2024 and opened a private practice, so I could focus on my subspecialties, and support people with highly individualized care.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road, but I feel really fortunate to be where I am now. I started my journey into healthcare in 2005, first graduating with an associates in nursing in 2008. I then worked full time in various nursing positions (hospital-based, emergency department, surgical) while I put myself back through school for my bachelors, masters, and post-graduate certificates. It took me about twelve years total from beginning to end. Starting my private practice has been simultaneously the most exciting and nerve-racking experience of my life. I waited until I had experience at a high-volume gynecology office and a smaller private practice before I branched out on my own. The biggest struggles and hurdles have been around learning the business side of private practice. All of the networking and excellent business relationships I had formed over the last decade really came through for me. I feel like I have a lot of community support.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Embrace Sexual Health & Gynecology PLLC?
I founded Embrace, my private practice, toward the end of 2024. Embrace focuses on providing a safe space for people to talk about traditionally taboo or uncomfortable topics. I still practice general gynecology, but about 90% of my practice is a combination of hormone management and sex medicine. Sex medicine can include concerns around pain with sexual activity, libido concerns, arousal/orgasm concerns. Embrace is unique to the area since there is only a small handful of other sex medicine providers, and most work for larger systems or specialize in sexual health in relationship to cancer survivorship. As of now, I am the only private practice specializing in sex medicine in the Vancouver area.
Embrace offers in person and virtual services for anyone in Oregon or Washington state. I operate under a membership model (cash-based) so I can offer longer appointments and much more support between.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is practicing medicine in a way that makes me proud to be a provider, while also striking a healthy work-life balance. I have worked in traditional insurance-based models, and while these are extremely important, I found my time was limited, and I wasn’t able to provide the level of care I wanted. Now, I can shape my practice to suit how I want to provide care. I am practicing medicine to suit the needs of my patients. I am specializing in areas of medicine I feel very passionate about. And I still have time to rest outside of work.
