Community Highlights: Meet Lars Helgeson of ValaBright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lars Helgeson.

Hi Lars, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I earned my bachelor’s degree, then went on to complete a master’s degree in engineering before serving four years in the Air Force. After my military service, I entered the technology and marketing world by founding CoolerEmail, an email marketing company, which later evolved into GreenRope, a full CRM platform built around sales, marketing, and customer engagement automation. Drawing on decades of experience in CRM, communication systems, and automation,

I launched Easy Aftercare last year to help healthcare providers deliver better post-procedure guidance to patients. Now, with the rebrand to ValaBright, my work has expanded beyond aftercare into a broader mission: addressing patient education shortfalls across the healthcare system through automated, personalized, multimedia education that helps patients understand, prepare, recover, and make better health decisions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started as a bootstrapped founder, living off the modest savings I had from my time in the Air Force. There was no safety net, no big funding round, and no easy path forward. In the early days, that meant stretching every dollar, eating a lot of Top Ramen and mac and cheese, and learning how to build something from almost nothing.

The road became even harder when a conflict with my first business partner led to an expensive separation. Later, my first CTO left on short notice and went to work with our largest reseller partner, who then terminated their contract with us. Each situation created real financial and operational pressure, and each one forced me to make difficult decisions while keeping the business moving forward.

One of the most painful challenges came when my best friend and CFO admitted to embezzling from me for a year. That experience was personally devastating, not just because of the financial damage, but because of the betrayal behind it.

I overcame each of these setbacks, but none of them left me unchanged. They taught me hard lessons about trust, accountability, leadership, and resilience. More than anything, they reinforced that perseverance is not just about pushing through difficult moments; it is about adapting, learning, and continuing to build even when the path becomes far more difficult than expected.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What should we know?
ValaBright was created to address one of the most overlooked problems in healthcare: patients often do not fully understand what they need to do before, during, or after care. That gap affects outcomes, patient confidence, staff workload, cancellations, complications, and trust. ValaBright helps healthcare organizations deliver clear, automated, personalized education through text, video, audio, and written guidance so patients receive the right information at the right time, in a format they can actually use.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, and what are you known for?
ValaBright specializes in automated healthcare education across the full patient journey, from early inquiry and procedure consideration to preparation, aftercare, and long-term lifestyle support. We are known for turning complex medical instructions into accessible, timely, patient-friendly communication that can be delivered automatically by SMS and multimedia content. Our platform helps practices, hospitals, medical device companies, pharmaceutical companies, and clinical trial teams educate patients or providers more effectively without adding more burden to already busy staff.

What sets you apart from others?
What sets ValaBright apart is that we combine automation, personalization, healthcare-specific content, and multimedia education into one system. Instead of relying on paper handouts, one-time conversations, or generic follow-up messages, ValaBright delivers education based on where someone is in their journey and what they need to understand at that moment. We can support different procedures, patient factors, languages, accessibility needs, and engagement styles, helping organizations improve education while reducing repetitive calls, preventable confusion, and avoidable risk.

What are you most proud of brand-wise?
Brand-wise, I am most proud that ValaBright represents both clarity and compassion. The name reflects illumination, education, and guidance, which is exactly what we want to bring to healthcare. Patients are often anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure of what questions to ask. ValaBright is designed to make the path feel more understandable and less intimidating, while also helping providers deliver a more modern, consistent, and supportive experience.

What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, services, etc.?
I want readers to know that ValaBright is not just software; it is a better way to guide people through healthcare. Whether someone is considering a procedure, preparing for surgery, recovering at home, learning about a medical device, or participating in a clinical trial, education should not be limited to a rushed conversation or a packet of paper. ValaBright helps organizations deliver personalized, automated, interactive education that supports better understanding, better engagement, and better care. If you know a healthcare provider or work with anyone who does, I’d love to work with them to help their patients’ education create healthier outcomes.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is sitting in my dad’s high school science classroom and watching him teach. I remember seeing how he could take complicated ideas and make them understandable, using curiosity, patience, and enthusiasm to help students connect with the material. At the time, I may not have fully understood the impact of what I was watching, but looking back, it shaped the way I think about education, communication, and service. Seeing him guide students through learning left a lasting impression on me, and it is part of what still inspires my work today. It drives me to help people understand things that may otherwise feel confusing, intimidating, or out of reach.
