Hi Lourdes (Lulu), so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Lourdes Hernandez, and I’m the owner of Lulu’s Bakery Shop. My journey started during the pandemic, after spending over 20 years working in property management. I decided to take a leap of faith and turn my passion for baking into something more.
I began baking from home, and at first, orders were slow. I had to work very hard to build trust, promote my business, and reach new customers. Little by little, through word of mouth and social media, my business started to grow. I then moved into my garage, expanded the space as demand increased, and eventually was able to open my own shop.
It hasn’t been easy—I’ve had many late nights, made sacrifices, and missed special moments with my family—but my husband and daughters have been my biggest support system throughout this journey.
Today, Lulu’s Bakery Shop is a growing small business where I specialize in custom cakes and desserts made with love. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I’m excited for what’s ahead as I continue to grow and serve my community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I faced was when I decided to expand my shop.
At that time, it was very difficult to find clear information about the permits and requirements. I felt like I wasn’t getting the right guidance, and it was frustrating not knowing exactly what steps to take.
But instead of giving up, I made the decision to educate myself. I started researching, asking questions, and pushing forward until I understood the process. From that point on, I didn’t stop until I made it happen.
That experience taught me to be persistent, resourceful, and to trust myself. It was a challenge, but it helped me grow not just as a business owner, but as a person.

Lulu’s Bakery Shop is a small, family-owned business where everything is made with love and attention to detail. I specialize in custom cakes and desserts for all types of special occasions, including birthdays, weddings, and events.
What really sets my business apart is the level of personalization I offer. I take the time to understand each customer’s vision and turn it into something unique, not just a cake, but a meaningful centerpiece for their celebration. I also focus on using fresh ingredients and creating designs that are both beautiful and delicious.
I’m also proud of how my brand represents my journey and my culture. I started by serving mostly my Spanish-speaking community, and over time, my business has grown to serve a diverse group of customers while still keeping that personal connection.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with my customers. Many of them come back for every important moment in their lives, and that means everything to me.
What I want people to know is that Lulu’s Bakery Shop is more than just a bakery—it’s a place where people can come for something special, something made just for them, with care, passion, and heart.
