Today we’d like to introduce you to Nedy Johnson.
Hi Nedy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My voice has always been inexplicably linked to my soul. There is no separating the two.
I’d spent my entire life being told not to sing. However, in December 2022, I decided “f*** that,” and started going for it anyway.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hell is other people. Most of the obstacles I’ve encountered are people finding my career ridiculous or unachievable.
The other half has been psychological: somehow finding a way to keep going even when taught and raised by people that just don’t give a damn.
The final part is physical. I have strep throat right now and as any singer will assume, I am PISSED! I have a show on Friday and I can’t even talk right now. I am NOT happy about it. Fellow vocalists, you feel me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a vocalist, songwriter, social media manager, creative director, video editor, graphic designer and all other multi-hyphenates one has to be to get noticed in this cut throat industry.
The thing is, I don’t mind the marketing aspect of the music industry. Any career centered on notoriety has always required a watchful eye for enticement. There’s simply a larger pool to compete with than our ancestors would have waded through even 20 years ago (yes older people, I’m calling you a dinosaur).
My point being: I’m like Rachel Berry, “I need applause to live.” So why would I be mad that I have to spend half of my career behind-the-scenes facilitating said attention? All the world’s a stage, after all.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Who can you trust when the attention is turned away from you?
My version of success does include the glitz and glamour and fame. But at the end of the day, I use my passion for music to meet like-minded people that now have a built-in excuse to grab a drink with me after a show, alcoholic or otherwise.
After all, what’s the point in any of it? To share these fleeting moments of happiness and passion. So hopefully you trust the people standing next to you. And if you don’t, it’s time to find some new people.
