Today we’d like to introduce you to Aliyah Babauta-Sims.
Aliyah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story really begins in childhood. I’m the daughter of a chef and business owner, so food was never just food in our house — it was work, love, and community all at once. I was put to work early on, and those early experiences shaped how I see food as something that brings people together.
As an adult, I continued that path by serving as a culinary specialist in the Army. Cooking at that scale pushed my skills even further and deepened my love for feeding people well. Later, when I moved into culinary management, I realized something important; I was responsible for nourishing people, but I didn’t yet have the technical knowledge to do that in a way that truly supported long-term health.
That realization became a turning point for me. I also watched my father experience health issues where diet played a major role, and it made things very real, very fast. I wanted to understand how food could promote wellness without asking people to give up the flavors, traditions, and cultural foods that define who they are. That’s what led me toward dietetics and the path to becoming a registered dietitian.
Today, I’m just months away from sitting for my dietetic exam, and I’m still doing what I’ve always loved: serving people. Whether through my food or my work, my goal is to give people a sense of home, a good meal, a story, and absolutely no guilt. At the heart of everything I do is one mission: helping people build a healthy relationship with food while staying connected to their cultural traditions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t been easy. Time was my biggest obstacles and balancing motherhood with three kids, military life, being a spouse to a service member, and returning to school full time. Education felt like a barrier until I finally committed and made a major life change to pursue this calling fully.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Sunflower Kitchen by Chef Li?
Sunflower Kitchen by Chef Li is a food and wellness company rooted in the belief that nourishment should feel good: physically, culturally, and emotionally. We specialize in small-group catering and meal prep, creating food that feels like home while still supporting health and balance.
What makes Sunflower Kitchen unique is the bridge we build between culinary tradition and nutrition science. Our meals are designed with intention; honoring flavor, culture, and real life, not restriction or guilt. In addition to catering and meal prep, we also offer personalized nutrition plans that meet people where they are.
As I continue to grow, Sunflower Kitchen will be expanding into nutrition education and counseling as a registered dietician, allowing us to support clients not just through the food we prepare, but through knowledge, guidance, and sustainable habits. Our goal is to help people build a healthier relationship with food while staying connected to the traditions and stories that matter to them.
