Today we’d like to introduce you to Ms. Kash.
Hi Ms., can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I first moved to Seattle I lived at homeless shelter with my two sons. We lived there about 8 months before moving into transitional housing. I left Oakland Ca to give my kids better opportunities and to change my old ways and become a better woman and mother. During our situation, I never veered away from my love of music. In order to start building a name for myself in this new unfamiliar territory, I started performing at open mic shows. That’s how I started meeting promoters, artists, producers etc. And within a month or so I’d made all the connections I needed to re-start my music journey. Sometimes I had to take the kids to the studio with me to record. I remember packing there little snacks and favorite toys & blankets. It was challenging but worth it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the struggles I’ve faced were things like not having support. My kids and I were alone in Seattle. I didn’t have anyone to call and say “I have a show could you watch the kids?”, Or even if I was feeling overwhelmed, there was no “break” or “time off” from Motherhood for me. So I had to find ways around that and eventually God started placing the right people in our lives at the right moments that were able to help us out at times. And the kids started getting older so I was able to do some shows, but not all of them. Other challenges were things like turning down opportunities to relocate for record labels and producers. I refused to have my kids in an unstable environment, moving all around the country based on “possibilities”. I felt that if things were meant to be, then they will.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most proud of being an independent artist and owning my creativity. A lot of people wanted to own rights to what I do, and also tell me what and how to do things. I’m not a “gimmick” or a “commodity”. I can only be me so that’s the path I chose by not signing with a label. I feel my authenticity sets me a part from other Artist. I’m free to be myself, so that allows my music to grow and evolve just like I am growing and evolving as person. Most industry artists have to stick to the persona they signed up for. Never changes topics, and talking about the same things their entire career.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck. I feel that my family and I are blessed. Life is full of lessons and blessings depending on how you look at it. Every time I think things are bad, I take a moment and think to myself where is the lesson in all of this? Or what am I being protected from? Things may seem bad in the moment, but sometimes there’s a lesson to be learned, that helps build a stronger foundation for the blessings that are on the way.
