Today we’d like to introduce you to Shalini Thyagaraja.
Shalini, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story has always been shaped by curiosity, resilience, and a desire to create meaningful impact. I came to the United States at 19 with two suitcases and a dream, to build a life rooted in purpose and possibility. Education became my first pathway forward, and I pursued it deeply, from research to advanced degrees in data and technology, always driven by a love of learning and problem-solving.
Over the past two decades, I’ve built a career in technology and business transformation, leading complex programs across Fortune 500 organizations. Today, I’m a senior leader at Microsoft, where I focus on improving customer and partner experiences at scale. I’ve thrived in high-performance environments, but along the way, I also witnessed and personally experienced the cost of constant striving without pause.
That realization became a turning point. I began exploring wellness, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation, not as an escape from ambition, but as a way to sustain it. What started as personal healing evolved into professional purpose. I became a certified health coach, yoga and meditation teacher, and founded Mind Space, where I support leaders, especially women in tech in building resilience, clarity, and balance alongside success.
Today, I live at the intersection of technology and wellbeing. I lead in corporate spaces while mentoring, speaking, podcasting, and building community around intentional leadership. At every stage, my path has been about integration – honoring ambition and humanity together. Where I am now is the result of learning to lead not just with skill and strategy, but with self-awareness, compassion, and intention.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many people building a life and career from the ground up, I faced challenges that weren’t always visible on paper. Coming to the U.S. at a young age meant navigating a new culture, financial uncertainty, and the pressure to succeed without a built-in support system. Early in my career, I often felt I had to work twice as hard to prove my credibility, especially in technical, male-dominated environments.
Professionally, the pace and expectations of high-performance roles brought their own challenges. There were moments of burnout, self-doubt, and the quiet struggle of trying to balance ambition with personal wellbeing, motherhood, and caregiving responsibilities. For a long time, I believed that resilience meant pushing through at all costs.
One of the biggest shifts came when I realized that sustainable success requires a different definition of strength. Learning to slow down, set boundaries, and ask for support wasn’t easy, but it became transformational. Through that process, I built tools around mindfulness, nervous system regulation, and intentional leadership that not only helped me thrive, but also allowed me to support others facing similar challenges.
Those struggles didn’t derail my journey, they shaped it. They deepened my empathy, sharpened my leadership, and clarified my purpose. Today, the obstacles I faced inform how I lead teams, mentor women, and build inclusive, human-centered spaces where people can succeed without sacrificing themselves in the process.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a senior technology leader at Microsoft with over 20 years of experience in program management, business transformation, and customer and partner experience across large, complex organizations. My work focuses on translating strategy into execution, leading cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, human-centered solutions that improve how technology serves people at scale. I’m known for bringing clarity to ambiguity, building trust across diverse stakeholders, and leading with both rigor and empathy.
What I specialize in is operating at the intersection of performance and wellbeing. Alongside my corporate career, I’m a certified health coach and yoga and meditation teacher, and I’ve intentionally integrated these disciplines into how I lead. This allows me to build resilient teams, navigate change thoughtfully, and model sustainable leadership in high-pressure environments. I don’t see wellness as separate from success, I see it as essential to it.
What I’m most proud of is not just the outcomes I’ve delivered, but how I’ve delivered them. I’ve mentored women globally, served on Women ERG boards, and created spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to do their best work. Through founding Mind Space, hosting the Let’s Talk Wellness with Shal podcast, and speaking at industry and community events, I’ve extended my impact beyond my role, helping professionals redefine success in a way that honors both ambition and humanity.
What sets me apart is this integration. I lead with data, strategy, and execution, while also prioritizing nervous system regulation, self-awareness, and intentional presence. That combination has allowed me to drive meaningful business impact while fostering cultures where people can thrive, not just perform.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that surprises many people is that before I ever spoke on stages or led large teams, I was deeply uncomfortable being visible. I was the person who preferred to stay behind the scenes – doing the work quietly, avoiding the spotlight, and believing that impact spoke for itself.
Stepping into leadership, speaking, and storytelling was something I had to learn and grow into. It came from years of pushing past self-doubt, cultural conditioning, and the fear of “taking up space.” Even starting my podcast and public wellness work felt vulnerable at first.
That journey is what makes my work so meaningful today. I don’t just teach confidence, resilience, or intentional leadership from theory, I teach it from lived experience. The version of me people see now is the result of choosing courage repeatedly, not comfort. And that’s why I’m especially passionate about helping other women find their voice, trust themselves, and lead visibly without losing who they are.
